STELLA'S SHED!
(house!)
WARNING!
It would not be wise to undertake any building project with less than $5000. capitol and a steady income. I did and have many regrets!!!

Current Photo of Stellas Shed (9/25/08)
Yes we have completed a 12' X 14' building as the first phase in the house for Stella. On 4/28/08 Stella moved in even though there was not yet even basic cr facilities. She has since added the womans touch to make the house a home!

Septic Tank completed 9/15 currently being used as Patio?

A Shed for Stella (part 3)

You may have noticed it has been quite some time since my last post. This is perhaps due as much to my embarassment as due to my lack of progress. I had the ordasity to get ill and spend a few days away from the building site. When I returned to resecure the site to slow the rapid departure of my construction materials during the stopage due to a lack of finances, I discovered the "Square 3 meter X 3 meter" shed was not square nor was it 3X3 as I had staked it. The shed instead had one corner moved inside the stake 1 foot and also 1 side had been shortened to 9 feet instead of the staked 10 feet. I now had a shed that was out of square and unequal in the size of the wall length. Needless to say if a young man comes to you telling you he knows anything about construction if his name is "Ado" keep searching he is not your answer.

This is my second trip to Philippines to be with my sweet thing. This trip I have been here 4 months and have 6 weeks to go on my visa before I return to the US to work and replenish my cash reserves. For those who don’t know me I am attempting to live with my future Mrs. on approximately $600. (US) per month. Last year I was here for 4 months and returned to work for 8 months in the US with the idea of perhaps staying a year this trip. However the diving dollar has bit drastically into the budget and even with careful budgeting I must needs once again return to work for a time. Because of the advanced age and declining health of my parents I may stay longer in the US and bring my “sweet Stella” to assist with my parents. It is this possibility that spurred me to build a storage shed on a piece of property that Stella owns in close proximity to her family home.
We discussed what arrangements we would need to make if she were to join me stateside and the biggest obstacle was how to retain our belongings with out renting a house while she was gone. The shed is our solution and Stella says she can even live in it while awaiting my return or her departure to the US.
Before I came here to live I was always seeking stories about real life for the American retired and living in the Philippines. I will try to post every few days about this adventure. If you have no interest you can just delete the posts that are titled a “Shed for Stella”. We were constructing a simple 3 meter X 3 meter hollow block building with a shed roof and a cement floor. For us yanks that is 10’ x 10’ (about the size of a very small bedroom in the states. We will only put 1 door to facilitate the securing that will be required if Stella is to join me stateside.
Last week Stella contacted a “relative”(Ado) who is in the business and agreed for 250p per day he would build it and we also engaged her brother in law(Pito 200p) to assist as it would be a 2 person job. They would begin on Monday and he gave us a material list to get started. We had Hollow block, sand and gravel Delivered on Friday and Coco wood, Rebar and bags of cement delivered on Saturday.
The first sign this was in the Philippines was we received a text Sunday PM Ado would be unable to start before Thursday.
Undaunted Stella found a Hubel Hubel driver who was off on Mondays and would help Pito the first day.
First day we needed to finish a wall that diverted water runoff away from our lot and then start the shed. I was encouraged when they used a “water level” to establish the height of the wall at the far end. There is about a 8” fall in the 10’ from existing wall to the desired end of the wall. Yes so they put a 8” mortar joint under the Top row of blocks on the low end! This section was completed (?) by noon so I was encouraged to believe the progress might be rapid. However in the afternoon of the first day all they accomplished was the “hole “ for the first corner post. (not completed but deep enough for 2 or 3 dead bodies?) So as the sun sets slowly in the west 1 day in a Shed For Stella has ran its course.

Shed for Stella (Part 2)
I guess if you are still reading you are not yet bored to tears? 1st day Stella fired the Hubel driver because she thought he was not motivated . So the second day we had a new worker named Rudy. The end of day 2 produced only 3 corner post holes and they begin to work on 4th column.
The 4th column is the stump of a coconut tree which must be removed so on the 3rd day new workers Rudy, Samuel and Brian worked all day on post # 4. The hole was only 2/3 complete at the end of the day. So day 3 saw only 4 holes in the ground and a 10 ft wall of block for the water deflection . So far my $300. Is a disappointment. There is still lot of materials left but the labor may eat the cash before the materials are used. My Neighbor Paul has many tools which fascinate the workers but in the reality they prefer to use their tools, Because they know how to use their tools?
The 4th day equally a disappointment as the progress was very slow and the “foreman” we had hired told Stella he needed more materials which she felt obliged to get without consulting me. The problem was she used the money I had set aside for wages for the workers. I am of a mind you pay the laborer first or stop work so as soon as I found out we were out of funds I stopped the workers and began to search for funds to pay the labor that was due.
The solution(?) to the shortage was a short term loan against my cell of 3000p. (Payback will be 3600p) When I tried to transfer funds I discovered that some cretin in Spain was using my debit card for his own vices. The bank says the solution is imminent however 1 week later my funds are still tied up and the bank account that I live on has a negative balance. I used a cash transfer from a credit card (also expensive and unexpected expense) But although work has stopped on Stellas’ shed all seems to be in order now and we will proceed as funds become available.
I have about $500. US invested in the project thus far. There will be a breakdown of how the money was spent soon. I will post it here on this web site for those who are interested
